Switching SEO Agencies in Dubai Without Losing Rankings

A Dubai company gives its SEO agency 30 days’ notice. Two weeks after the agency leaves, organic leads fall by a third. The new agency blames the old one, the old one blames the new one, and nobody can see what changed because the old agency’s dashboard, reports and some of the links went with it.

The short answer: switching SEO agencies does not have to cost you rankings. Rankings drop after a switch for specific reasons: lost access to your own accounts, links or pages the old agency controlled, a rushed redesign, broken tracking, or a gap in work. Secure ownership of every account before you give notice, take a full baseline snapshot, get a written handover, and stop the new agency from making big changes in its first month.

This guide covers why rankings drop, a handover checklist you can send to your current agency, a 90 day transition plan, and the mistakes I see most often when UAE companies switch.

Why rankings drop after switching SEO agencies

Changing agencies does not affect Google directly. Google never sees your contract. What it sees is what happens to your site and its links during the switch. In the transitions I have reviewed, drops almost always trace back to one of these:

CauseWhat happensHow to prevent it
Agency controlled linksLinks from sites the agency owns or rents are removed when you leaveAsk for a full list of links built and who controls each site
Content on agency assetsLanding pages or blogs hosted on the agency’s domain or account disappearMove all content onto your own domain before notice ends
Rushed redesign or migrationNew agency rebuilds the site, changes URLs and loses redirectsNo redesign in the first 90 days unless planned with a redirect map
Broken trackingTags removed or GA4 access lost, so traffic looks like it fell when it did notOwn GA4 and Tag Manager yourself; check tracking the day the old agency leaves
Work gapNo content or fixes for two or three months during the handoverOverlap the old and new agency by a few weeks, or plan a short gap
Panic fixesNew agency disavows links or rewrites everything to “start fresh”Audit first, change later; see the first 30 days below

Before you give notice: secure ownership of everything

Do this quietly, before you tell the current agency you are leaving. Each item below should be owned by an account your company controls, with the agency added as a user.

  1. Google Search Console. Make sure someone in your company is a verified owner. Google’s permissions guide explains that removing an owner does not remove their verification token, so a removed agency can verify again unless you delete its token (the HTML file, meta tag or DNS record it used).
  2. Google Analytics 4 and Tag Manager. Your company account should hold the Administrator role. Check that the agency has not set up GA4 under its own organisation.
  3. Google Business Profile. Your company should be the primary owner. Google explains how to transfer primary ownership if the agency holds it.
  4. Domain registrar and DNS. The domain must be registered to your company, not to the agency or a former employee.
  5. Hosting and CMS admin. Create your own administrator login for WordPress or your CMS and your hosting account.
  6. Bing Webmaster Tools. Often forgotten, and increasingly important because Microsoft’s AI tools draw on Bing.
  7. Paid SEO tools. Ask which tool accounts hold your rank tracking, audits and AI visibility history, and whether you can export or transfer them.

Take a baseline snapshot before switching SEO agencies

Without a baseline, nobody can prove whether the switch helped or hurt. Export and store these in your own drive before the agency knows you are leaving:

  • Search Console Performance data (queries and pages) for the longest date range available, plus the Pages indexing report
  • GA4 organic sessions and key events by landing page, for the last 12 months
  • Rankings for your priority keywords, with URLs
  • A full crawl of the site: every URL, status code, title, canonical and redirect
  • Backlink export from a tool of your choice
  • AI visibility for your priority prompts, if you track it

SEO agency handover checklist

Send this list with your notice and make the final invoice conditional on receiving it. Your contract should already require it; if it does not, see our list of SEO contract red flags in the UAE.

ItemWhy you need it
Change log for the whole engagementShows every page, redirect and technical change made, so nothing is undone by accident
Redirect mapOld URLs and where they point; losing these is the fastest way to lose rankings
List of links and mentions built, with who controls each siteReveals any links that may vanish when you leave
Content files and briefsSource documents, images and the keyword each page targets
Keyword and prompt tracking setsSo the new agency can measure from the same starting point
Open issues and planned workWhat was in progress and what was recommended but not shipped
Structured data and tag setupSchema added, tags in Tag Manager, and what each one does
Reports and raw dataEvery monthly report, plus exports from any tools in the agency’s account

A 90 day plan for switching SEO agencies without losing rankings

Ninety day SEO agency transition plan from securing access and baseline to audit, quick wins and new roadmap

Days 1 to 30: protect what works

  • Confirm access to every account, and remove the old agency’s verification tokens and logins once handover is complete.
  • Check tracking the day the old agency leaves: GA4 events firing, tags intact, Search Console verified.
  • The new agency audits, compares against the baseline and makes no large changes. No redesign, no mass URL changes, no bulk content deletion.
  • Do not disavow links in a panic. Google says most sites do not need the disavow tool and it should be used with caution, mainly where there is or may be a manual action for unnatural links.

Days 31 to 60: fix and restart

  • Ship the technical fixes the audit found, starting with anything that blocks crawling or indexing. Our technical SEO audit checklist for the UAE lists the priorities.
  • Restart content: update pages that are slipping before publishing new ones.
  • Replace any links that disappeared with earned mentions from relevant UAE and industry sites.

Days 61 to 90: new roadmap

  • Agree the 6 to 12 month roadmap, monthly deliverables and reporting format. Our guide to what a monthly SEO retainer should include gives a template.
  • Compare traffic and leads against the same period last year, not the previous month.
  • Only now consider larger changes such as a redesign, with a full redirect map.

Expect a quiet period rather than an immediate jump. For realistic expectations after the switch, see how long SEO takes in Dubai.

Mistakes UAE companies make when switching SEO agencies

  • Giving notice before securing access. Some agencies slow down or lock accounts once they know you are leaving.
  • Combining the switch with a website rebuild. Two big changes at once make it impossible to tell what caused a drop.
  • Switching in your peak season. If most of your leads come in a few months each year, switch before or after them, not during.
  • Choosing the new agency on price alone. Compare quotes by hours and deliverables; our guide to SEO cost in Dubai shows how.
  • Not asking about “rented” links. If an agency built links on sites it owns, ask before you sign what happens to them if you leave.

How Crawl To Click handles SEO agency transitions

When a business moves its SEO to Crawl To Click, the first month is about protecting what already works, not rebuilding it. Before any change goes live, I secure your ownership of Search Console, GA4, Tag Manager, Business Profile and Bing Webmaster Tools, take a full baseline snapshot, and go through the previous agency’s handover against the checklist above. Then I run a technical audit and compare it with the baseline, so every later change can be measured against where you started. Only after that do we agree a roadmap, built around our Search Market Fit approach: focusing first on the searches where real demand meets what you sell, rather than producing content for its own sake. You own everything we produce, from content and reports to tracking setups and prompt lists. You can read more about who we are and how we work.

FAQs on switching SEO agencies in Dubai

Will I lose rankings if I change SEO agency?

Not if the switch is managed. Rankings drop when you lose access to accounts, when links or pages controlled by the old agency disappear, when the new agency makes large changes too early, or when work stops for months. Secure ownership and a handover first to avoid these.

What should I get from my old SEO agency when I leave?

A change log, redirect map, list of links built and who controls each site, content files, keyword and prompt tracking sets, open issues, structured data and tag details, and all reports and raw data exports.

How do I remove an old agency from Google Search Console?

Remove them as a user or owner in Search Console settings, and also delete the verification token they used, such as an HTML file, meta tag or DNS record. Google notes that a removed owner can verify again if their token stays on the site.

Should the new agency redesign my website straight away?

No. Avoid redesigns and mass URL changes for the first 90 days unless they are planned with a full redirect map. Making several large changes at once makes it impossible to tell what caused any drop.

How long does it take to recover after switching SEO agencies?

If the switch is managed well, there may be no drop at all. If rankings fell because of lost redirects or links, recovery usually starts once the cause is fixed, with results compared against the same period last year.
