Finding High Value Reddit Threads: Search Operators, Ranking Reddit Threads and AI Cited Reddit Threads

Typing your product category into Reddit’s search box returns hundreds of threads, most of which no buyer or AI assistant will ever read. The skill is not finding Reddit threads; it is finding the few dozen that actually shape what Google shows and what ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity say about your category. This guide shows exactly how, with search operators, copy and paste queries and a tracking sheet.

The short answer: high value Reddit threads come from three lists: threads that rank in Google for your buying keywords, threads that AI assistants cite when asked your buying questions, and threads that mention your brand or competitors. Build the first list with site:reddit.com searches and an SEO tool filtered to reddit.com, the second by running your buying questions through several AI assistants three times each, and the third with Reddit search operators and mention alerts. Threads that appear on two or three lists are your top priority.

What makes a Reddit thread high value for SEO and AEO?

A Reddit thread is high value when buyers or AI assistants actually read it while making a decision in your category. In practice that means it ranks in Google for a buying query, is cited in AI answers, or discusses your brand or competitors.

Three sources of high value Reddit threads: threads ranking in Google, threads cited by AI assistants and threads mentioning brands

These lists overlap less than most teams expect. AI assistants rewrite questions into several related searches, so Ahrefs found only about 12% of URLs cited by AI assistants ranked in Google’s top 10 for the original prompt (Ahrefs). A thread can therefore shape AI answers without ranking for your keyword, and the reverse. You need all three lists.

Popularity is not the test. Semrush found about 80% of AI cited Reddit posts had fewer than 20 upvotes (Semrush). The reasons are covered in our guide on why Google and LLMs cite Reddit.

Which Google search operators find Reddit threads?

The Google operators that find Reddit threads fastest are site:reddit.com, exact phrases in quotes, intitle:, OR, and the before: and after: date operators.

Reddit thread search operator cheat sheet listing Google operators, Reddit search operators and buying intent words
OperatorWhat it doesExample
site:reddit.comLimits results to Redditsite:reddit.com best payroll software
site:reddit.com/r/nameLimits results to one subredditsite:reddit.com/r/smallbusiness payroll
“exact phrase”Matches the words in that ordersite:reddit.com “alternative to Tool A”
intitle:Requires the word in the thread titlesite:reddit.com intitle:vs Tool A
ORMatches either term (capital letters)site:reddit.com “Tool A” OR “Tool B” review
before: and after:Limits results by date; accepts a year or a full datesite:reddit.com “Tool A” after:2025

Google’s Search Liaison confirmed in 2025 that the before: and after: operators are still in beta, so use them to narrow results, not as an exact filter (Search Engine Roundtable).

What Google queries find buying intent Reddit threads?

Buying intent Reddit threads are found by combining site:reddit.com with the words buyers use when choosing: best, recommend, vs, alternative, review, worth it, legit and pricing.

Copy these templates, replacing the placeholders:

site:reddit.com best [category] for [audience]
site:reddit.com recommend [category] [industry]
site:reddit.com intitle:vs [your brand]
site:reddit.com intitle:vs [competitor]
site:reddit.com "alternative to [competitor]" OR "alternatives to [competitor]"
site:reddit.com "[your brand]" review
site:reddit.com "[your brand]" worth it
site:reddit.com "is [your brand] legit"
site:reddit.com "[your brand]" pricing OR cost
site:reddit.com/r/[subreddit] [category]
site:reddit.com [category] [city or country]
site:reddit.com "[competitor]" after:2025

Run every template for your brand and your top three competitors. For local businesses, add city, area and country names, and test in each language your customers use.

How do you find Reddit threads that rank in Google for your keywords?

Find ranking Reddit threads by searching your buying keywords in Google, noting every Reddit result and the Discussions and forums box, then using an SEO tool to list all Reddit URLs ranking for your keyword set.

  1. Search manually for your 20 to 30 most valuable keywords in a private window, set to the country you sell in. Record every Reddit result and its position.
  2. Check the Discussions and forums feature. Google introduced it in September 2022 to show forum posts with advice from people for relevant queries (Android Central). Threads shown there get high visibility even when they are not in the classic top 10.
  3. Use your SEO tool at scale. Export the ranking URLs for your full keyword list and filter the domain to reddit.com. This shows which threads rank, for which keywords and at which positions.
  4. Check competitors’ ranking pages in the same tool, filtered to reddit.com, to find threads that rank for their keywords where you are not mentioned.

Remember that Reddit blocked several search engines, including Bing, from indexing new posts in July 2024 (SiliconANGLE). Google is the search engine where Reddit threads matter most.

How do you find Reddit threads that AI assistants cite?

Find AI cited Reddit threads by asking your buying questions in several AI assistants, three times each in fresh chats, and recording every Reddit URL in the citations.

  1. Write 20 to 30 buying questions in the words buyers use, across stages: problem, options, comparison, validation and experience.
  2. Run each question in ChatGPT with search, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode.
  3. Repeat each question three times in new chats. Answers and citations change between runs.
  4. Record every cited Reddit URL, the question that triggered it, the engine and the run.
  5. Count frequency. A thread cited in five of fifteen runs matters more than one cited once.

Repetition is essential: in research by SparkToro and Gumshoe, the same list of brand recommendations appeared twice less than 1 time in 100 (Search Engine Land). Google also confirms that its AI features may run multiple related searches across subtopics to build a response (Google Search Central), which is why cited threads often match a subtopic rather than your exact question. The same logging approach is explained in our guide to LLM mentions per 100 queries.

How do you search inside Reddit itself?

Reddit’s own search supports operators that Google does not, such as subreddit:, title:, author:, selftext: and flair:, which help you find threads inside specific communities and by specific users.

Reddit operatorWhat it doesExample
subreddit:Searches one subredditsubreddit:accounting payroll software
title:Searches thread titles onlytitle:”alternative to Tool A”
selftext:Searches the body of text postsselftext:”Company X”
author:Finds posts by a specific userauthor:yourbrandaccount
flair:Filters by post flairflair:Question inventory software
AND, OR, NOTCombines or excludes terms“Tool A” OR “Tool B”

Operator support has varied between Reddit’s old and new designs, and Boolean operators have historically worked most reliably on the old design (Online Tech Tips). If an operator returns odd results, fall back to a site:reddit.com search in Google.

How do you find Reddit threads that mention your brand or competitors?

Find brand mention threads with Reddit Pro alerts, regular Google and Reddit searches for your brand, product and common misspellings, and the same searches for your main competitors.

  • Reddit Pro: Reddit’s free business toolkit includes alerts when your brand is mentioned in a subreddit and AI generated reports on relevant trending conversations (TechCrunch).
  • Brand variants: search for your brand name, product names, founder names, common misspellings and old brand names.
  • Competitors: search for competitor names with alternative, vs, switched from and review. These threads are where buyers form shortlists.
  • Comments, not just titles: many mentions are in comments, so Google site:reddit.com searches with your brand in quotes often find more than Reddit’s title search.

How do you find older Reddit threads that still matter?

Find older Reddit threads by searching without a date limit and then with before: to surface threads that have ranked or been cited for years. Old threads matter: Limy found the median AI cited Reddit post was two years old, with 11% older than five years (Limy).

site:reddit.com best [category] before:2024
site:reddit.com "[your brand]" before:2024
site:reddit.com intitle:vs [competitor] before:2023

Older threads often contain outdated prices, discontinued plans or complaints about problems you have fixed. If such a thread is cited by AI assistants, a polite, disclosed and sourced update can correct what assistants repeat, provided the thread is still open for comments.

How do you prioritise the Reddit threads you find?

Prioritise Reddit threads by how many lists they appear on and by buying intent: a thread that is cited by AI, ranks in Google and mentions a competitor in a “best” or “vs” question comes first.

PriorityCriteriaAction
TopCited by AI and ranks in Google, with buying intentContribute or correct this month
HighCited by AI or ranks in the top 10, with buying intent or brand mentionsContribute or correct this quarter
MonitorRanks or is cited, but informational or no brand mentionsCheck monthly for new comments
IgnoreNeither ranks nor is citedNo action

For a points based version, use the thread priority score in our guide on why Google and LLMs cite Reddit.

What should a Reddit thread tracking sheet include?

A Reddit thread tracking sheet should hold one row per thread with its source list, the queries and engines that surfaced it, how often it appears, intent, brand mentions, sentiment and the action taken.

ColumnWhat to record
Thread URL and titleCanonical Reddit link
SubredditCommunity name and whether vendors may participate

Queries or questionsThe keywords or AI questions that surfaced it
Engines and runsWhich AI assistants cited it, and in how many runs

Keep the sheet next to your SOP so contributors know which threads to work on. Our Reddit SOP for B2B SaaS covers who does what once threads are chosen.

How often should you repeat the Reddit thread search?

Repeat the AI citation check monthly and the Google ranking check quarterly, with brand mention alerts running continuously.

What mistakes do teams make when finding Reddit threads?

  • Sorting by upvotes. Popular threads are rarely the ones AI assistants cite.
  • Checking AI answers once. Single runs miss most cited threads; repeat each question.
  • Searching only your brand. Category and competitor threads shape shortlists before buyers know your name.
  • Ignoring old threads. Two year old threads are typical citation sources.
  • Ignoring other languages. Peec AI found 40% to 73% of Reddit citations on Google’s AI surfaces in non English markets pointed to machine translated pages (Peec AI), so English threads can surface in other languages.
  • Finding threads but never acting. A list is only useful if each top thread has an owner and a next step.

How Crawl To Click finds high value Reddit threads

Crawl To Click is an SEO and AI visibility consultancy, and Reddit thread discovery is part of the citation source mapping we run for clients. We build the buying question set with the client’s sales and support teams, test it across Google and the main AI assistants with repeated runs, combine it with ranking data and brand mention searches, and deliver a scored thread sheet with owners and next steps. The method is the same for a software company, a clinic, a property developer or an online store; the questions, communities and languages change. It also feeds the wider work, described in our guide to AI citation source mapping, of finding every source that shapes AI answers in a category. Talk to us about running it for your brand.

FAQs on finding high value Reddit threads

How do I find Reddit threads about my product?

Search Google with site:reddit.com plus your brand name in quotes, search Reddit for your brand with title: and selftext: operators, include misspellings and product names, and set up mention alerts in Reddit Pro.

What is the best Google search operator for Reddit?

The site:reddit.com operator is the most useful. Combine it with exact phrases in quotes, intitle: for words like vs, OR for alternatives, and before: or after: to filter by date.

How do I find which Reddit threads ChatGPT cites?

Ask ChatGPT with search on your buying questions, three times each in new chats, and record every Reddit URL in its citations. Repeat the same questions in Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI features, and count how often each thread appears.

Are the most upvoted Reddit threads the most important for SEO?

No. Most Reddit threads cited by AI assistants have fewer than 20 upvotes. Threads matter because they rank for buying queries or answer the specific questions AI assistants search for, not because they are popular.

Can Reddit search operators find comments as well as posts?

Reddit’s search is mainly built around posts, titles and post text, so comments are harder to search. A Google search with site:reddit.com and the phrase in quotes often finds mentions inside comments more reliably.

How often should I check Reddit threads for my brand?

Keep brand mention alerts running and review them weekly, check which threads AI assistants cite every month, review Google rankings for Reddit threads every quarter, and rebuild your question set twice a year.
