Short answer: an AEO audit checklist for a UAE business should cover six areas: AI crawler access, an AI visibility baseline in English and Arabic, entity and brand consistency, answer readiness of your key pages, structured data, and off site citation gaps. A proper audit ends with a scored report and a prioritised fix list your team can act on, not a slide deck of screenshots.
Use this checklist two ways. If you are buying an audit, check that every section below appears in the proposal. If you are running it yourself, work through it in order, because the early sections decide whether the later ones matter at all.

What an AEO audit is and what it should deliver
An SEO audit asks whether search engines can crawl, index and rank your pages. An AEO audit asks a different question: when your buyers ask an AI system about your category, does it name you, cite you and describe you correctly, and if not, why not?
The two overlap heavily, so a good AEO audit builds on technical SEO rather than repeating it. If your site has not had a technical check recently, run our technical SEO audit checklist for UAE websites first. For the full picture of what an ongoing engagement looks like after the audit, see our guide to AEO services in Dubai.
AEO audit checklist: the six sections at a glance
| Section | Question it answers | Typical output |
|---|---|---|
| 1. AI crawler access | Can AI systems reach and read your pages? | Blocked bots, firewall rules, rendering issues |
| 2. AI visibility baseline | Where do you appear in AI answers today? | Prompt set with mention, citation and accuracy scores |
| 3. Entity consistency | Do all sources describe you the same way? | Mismatch list across site, GBP and directories |
| 4. Answer readiness | Do your pages answer buyer questions clearly? | Page by page rewrite priorities |
| 5. Structured data | Is your schema complete and accurate? | Missing or broken markup list |
| 6. Off site citation gaps | Which third party pages cite competitors but not you? | Target list for outreach and listings |
1. AI crawler access audit
This is the first check because it can make everything else pointless. If AI crawlers are blocked, no amount of content work will get you cited.
Check robots.txt for each AI crawler
Each AI company uses separate crawlers for separate jobs, and this is where most audits I see get it wrong. OpenAI documents that its search crawler, its training crawler and its user action agent are controlled independently. Blocking the training crawler does not remove you from ChatGPT search, but blocking the search crawler does. Google works the same way: Google states that its Google Extended token does not affect inclusion or ranking in Google Search.
A sensible starting point for a business that wants AI search visibility looks like this (crawler names must be written exactly as each company documents them):
# Allow ChatGPT search to find and cite your pages
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /
# Allow pages to load when a ChatGPT user asks about them
User-agent: ChatGPT-User
Allow: /
# Training crawlers are a separate business decision
# User-agent: GPTBot
# Disallow: /
The audit should list every AI crawler your robots.txt mentions, what each rule does, and whether that matches your actual intent. Training access is a legitimate business choice. Accidentally blocking search visibility is not.
Check your CDN and firewall, not just robots.txt
A clean robots.txt means nothing if your CDN blocks the request first. Cloudflare, which many UAE business sites sit behind, changed its default so AI bots are blocked unless the site owner allows them. In audits I run, this is one of the most common reasons a technically sound site is invisible to AI search: the marketing team never touched the setting and did not know it existed. Check the bot management settings in your CDN and any security plugin, then confirm with your server logs that AI crawlers are receiving normal responses.
Check that key content renders without scripts
Many AI crawlers read the raw HTML rather than running heavy scripts. Open your main service and pricing pages with scripts disabled. If the prices, service descriptions or FAQs disappear, AI systems may not see them either.
2. AI visibility baseline audit
The baseline is the part of the audit you will keep using for months, so insist it is done properly.
- Prompt set: 30 to 60 real buyer questions grouped by intent: shortlist, cost, comparison, problem and brand check.
- Platforms: at least ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and Copilot.
- Languages: English and Arabic prompts tested separately.
- Scoring: for each prompt, record whether you are mentioned, whether your page is cited, whether the description is accurate, and which competitors appear.
- Repeatability: the prompt list is saved so it can be rerun monthly against the same baseline.
Add first party data where it exists. Bing Webmaster Tools now has an AI Performance report showing how often your pages are cited in Copilot and Bing AI answers, including the queries that triggered the citation. It is the closest thing to an official citation report available today, and most UAE sites I check have never set up Bing Webmaster Tools at all. For ChatGPT specifically, our guide on how to track ChatGPT brand mentions in the UAE covers the tracking setup.
3. Entity and brand consistency audit
AI systems assemble their picture of your business from many sources. When those sources disagree, you either get described wrongly or left out. The audit should compare these fields across your website, Google Business Profile, UAE directories, LinkedIn, review sites and press mentions:
- Business name in English and in Arabic script, spelled the same way everywhere
- Address, emirate and free zone or mainland status
- Phone, WhatsApp number and opening hours
- Services offered and service areas
- Licence or registration details where your sector requires them
- Founding year, team size and key people
Your Google Business Profile carries extra weight because Google’s own guidance tells site owners to keep their Business Profile information up to date for AI features. If yours is unverified or incomplete, our guide to Google Business Profile verification in the UAE walks through it. For directory coverage, use our UAE local citations list as the reference set.
4. Content and answer readiness audit
Review your top 10 to 20 commercial pages against these checks:
- Does the page state its core answer in the first two or three sentences?
- Are prices, durations, locations and eligibility stated as plain facts rather than hidden behind “contact us”?
- Is there a genuine FAQ section answering the questions from your prompt set?
- Does the page show who wrote or reviewed it and why they are qualified?
- Is there content for each prompt in your baseline where competitors appear and you do not?
The output should be a page by page list ranked by commercial value, so your team rewrites the pages that bring enquiries first.
5. Structured data audit for AEO
Check that the following markup exists where relevant, validates without errors and matches the visible text on the page:
| Schema type | Where it belongs | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Organization | Homepage | Name, logo, social profiles and contact details match everywhere else |
| LocalBusiness | Location and contact pages | Address, emirate, hours and geo details are correct |
| Service | Service pages | Service names and areas match the visible content |
| FAQPage | Pages with real FAQs | Questions and answers match the text shown |
| Product | Ecommerce product pages | Price in AED, availability and reviews are current |
| Article and Person | Blog and guide pages | Author details are real and consistent |
6. Off site citation gap audit
From your baseline, collect every third party page the AI platforms cite for your prompts. Then sort them:
- Pages that cite competitors but not you: your outreach and listing targets.
- Pages that mention you with wrong details: correction requests.
- Pages that already cite you: relationships to protect and update.
This list is usually the most valuable output of the whole audit, because it shows exactly which sources the models trust in your category.

Arabic AEO audit checks for UAE websites
Arabic is where most AEO audits in the region fall short. Add these checks to every section above:
- Arabic prompts in the baseline, written the way your customers actually search rather than translated from English
- Your brand name in Arabic script, spelled consistently across your site, Google Business Profile and directories
- Arabic pages that are crawlable, correctly linked to their English versions and free of right to left layout issues (see our guide to fixing RTL website SEO issues)
- Arabic FAQ content that answers Arabic prompts, not just a translated copy of the English FAQ
- Arabic language sources in the citation gap list, since they often differ from English ones
AEO audit scoring template
Score each section from 0 to 2: 0 means missing or broken, 1 means partly done, 2 means complete. Copy this table into a spreadsheet and rerun it every quarter.

| Total (out of 30) |
As a rough guide, below 15 means fix the foundations before spending on content, 15 to 24 means targeted fixes will move the numbers, and 25 or above means the gains will mostly come from off site citations.
What your AEO audit report should include
Whoever runs the audit, the final report should contain:
- A one page summary with the total score and the three biggest issues
- The full prompt set with results per platform and language
- The crawler access findings with exact rules to change
- The entity mismatch list with where each fix needs to happen
- Page by page content priorities
- Schema errors and missing markup
- The citation gap target list
- A 90 day action plan with owners
If an audit you have paid for is missing the prompt set or the citation gap list, ask for them. Those two items are what make an AEO audit different from a relabelled SEO audit.
AEO audit checklist: frequently asked questions
What is included in an AEO audit?
A complete AEO audit covers six areas: AI crawler access, an AI visibility baseline across platforms and languages, entity and brand consistency, answer readiness of your key pages, structured data, and off site citation gaps. It should end with a scored report and a prioritised action plan.
How long does an AEO audit take?
A 2026 pricing study by First Page Sage found that one time GEO and AEO audits typically last 2 to 6 weeks. Sites with many locations, large product catalogues or both English and Arabic versions take longer because the prompt testing and content review grow with them.
Can I run an AEO audit myself?
Yes. The crawler, schema and consistency checks in this checklist can be done in house with free tools. The prompt baseline and citation gap analysis take more time and judgement, which is where most businesses bring in outside help.
Does blocking GPTBot remove my site from ChatGPT?
No. OpenAI documents GPTBot as its training crawler, which is controlled separately from the search crawler that decides whether your pages appear in ChatGPT search. Check both rules in your robots.txt and your CDN settings.
How often should I repeat an AEO audit?
Rerun the prompt baseline monthly and the full audit every quarter. AI answers change often, so a single snapshot goes out of date quickly.
