How to Get Your Website Cited by Perplexity

A procurement manager in Riyadh asks Perplexity to compare three cloud accounting tools for a company with entities in Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Perplexity answers in a few seconds with a comparison table and seven numbered sources. Two are vendor pricing pages, two are Reddit threads, one is a YouTube review, one is a regional tax adviser’s guide and one is a comparison article. Every one of those sources earned a visit from a buyer who was ready to shortlist. If your page is not among them, you are not in the comparison.

The short answer: to get your website cited by Perplexity, make sure PerplexityBot can crawl it, rank well in Google for the questions your buyers ask (Perplexity’s citations overlap with Google’s top 10 far more than other assistants), and write pages as self contained answer passages with clear facts, tables and visible update dates. Perplexity retrieves and ranks individual passages from its own index of over 200 billion URLs, so each section must make sense on its own. Then build mentions on the sources Perplexity cites most, led by Reddit and YouTube.

What is Perplexity, and why does it matter for your website?

Perplexity is an AI answer engine that searches the web for every question and answers with numbered citations to its sources, which makes it one of the few assistants where being cited reliably sends visitors to your site.

  • Perplexity handled about 200 million queries a day as of September 2025, according to its own research team (Perplexity Research).
  • Unlike assistants that search only for some prompts, Perplexity is built around search: almost every answer shows its sources, so citation is the default outcome rather than the exception.
  • Its Comet browser, which has an AI assistant built into browsing, was made free for everyone in 2025 (TechRepublic), extending Perplexity’s answers into everyday browsing.
  • Its audience skews towards research heavy use: professionals, analysts, students and buyers comparing options, which is exactly the audience B2B and high consideration brands want.

Perplexity is smaller than ChatGPT or Google, so treat it as one part of a wider plan built on LLM SEO and AEO, not a separate channel. The good news is that what earns Perplexity citations also helps everywhere else.

How does Perplexity choose which sources to cite?

Perplexity chooses sources by running your question against its own web index with both keyword and meaning based retrieval, ranking individual passages rather than whole pages through several stages, filtering out stale or unresponsive content, and citing the passages it used to write the answer.

Diagram of how Perplexity chooses sources in five steps: crawl and index over 200 billion URLs, retrieve with keyword and meaning based search, split pages into self contained passages, rank passages in several stages, and answer with numbered citations

Perplexity’s research team published unusually specific details in September 2025 (Perplexity Research):

  • Its own index. The index tracks over 200 billion unique URLs, refreshed by machine learning models that predict which pages need crawling and when, based on importance and how often they change.
  • Hybrid retrieval. It does not choose between keyword (lexical) and meaning based (semantic) retrieval; it queries both and merges the results.
  • Passages, not pages. Documents are split into self contained spans that are retrieved and ranked individually, as well as at document level.
  • Stale content filtered early. A prefiltering step removes clearly unresponsive or stale content before ranking.
  • Several ranking stages. Early stages use fast keyword and embedding scorers; later stages use more precise cross encoder models.
  • Authoritative domains prioritised. Documents from authoritative domains and under covered topics are prioritised for its fastest storage tier.

Google rankings still matter a lot. In an Ahrefs study of 15,000 long tail queries in July 2025, 28.6% of the URLs Perplexity cited ranked in Google’s top 10 for the query, against around 8% for ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot (Ahrefs). Of the major assistants, Perplexity is the most aligned with classic SEO, so pages that already rank have a head start.

Which websites does Perplexity cite most?

Perplexity cites Reddit and YouTube far more than any other sites, followed by Wikipedia, Facebook and Amazon, which means community discussion and video shape many Perplexity answers alongside brand and publisher websites.

Bar chart of the most cited domains in Perplexity in the US, September 2026, by share of citations among the top 50 sources: Reddit 21.6 percent, YouTube 20.8 percent, Wikipedia 6.3 percent, Facebook 4.5 percent, Amazon 3.6 percent, Healthline 2.6 percent

In Ahrefs’ September 2026 analysis of over 3.1 million US queries, Reddit held 21.6% and YouTube 20.8% of citations among the top 50 cited domains, followed by Wikipedia at 6.3%, Facebook at 4.5% and Amazon at 3.6% (Ahrefs). Ahrefs described Reddit’s share as the most concentrated top source of any assistant it studied.

Two practical conclusions follow. First, for many questions in your category, the fastest route into a Perplexity answer is a helpful contribution to a Reddit thread or a short YouTube video, not another blog post. Second, the long tail beyond the top domains is large: specialist publishers, vendor pages and niche guides win citations for specific questions, which is where most brand websites compete.

How is getting cited by Perplexity different from ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews?

Perplexity differs mainly in that it searches for almost every answer, uses its own index rather than Bing or Google, shows citations prominently, and leans more heavily on pages that already rank in Google.

How do you make sure PerplexityBot can crawl your site?

Allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt, make sure your firewall or bot protection is not blocking it, and keep important content in HTML that loads without user interaction, because Perplexity can only cite pages in its index.

Perplexity runs two agents (Perplexity documentation): PerplexityBot, which crawls pages to surface and link them in search results and, according to Perplexity, is not used to collect content for training AI foundation models; and Perplexity User, which fetches a page when a user’s question requires it and generally ignores robots.txt because a user triggered the visit. Here is a robots.txt block that allows PerplexityBot:

User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /

# Keep private areas out of all crawlers
User-agent: *
Disallow: /account/
Disallow: /checkout/

Then check three things that block crawlers without anyone noticing:

  • Bot protection and CDN rules. Some CDN and security settings block AI crawlers by default. Check your firewall logs or bot management dashboard for PerplexityBot, and allow it if you want to be cited.
  • Content that needs JavaScript or clicks. Prices in tabs, FAQs in accordions that load on click, and content inside scripts may not be captured. Put key facts in the initial HTML.
  • Server logs. Search your access logs for the PerplexityBot user agent to confirm it is visiting your important pages, not just the homepage.
grep -i "PerplexityBot" access.log | awk '{print $7}' | sort | uniq -c | sort -rn | head -20

This lists the 20 URLs PerplexityBot requested most. If your key service, pricing or comparison pages are missing, improve internal links to them and include them in your XML sitemap.

How do you write pages that Perplexity cites?

Write pages as a series of self contained passages: each section opens with a direct answer to one question, keeps the key fact, number and context in the same few sentences, and uses tables for comparisons, because Perplexity retrieves and ranks passages individually.

Because Perplexity splits documents into spans, a passage that depends on an earlier paragraph (“as mentioned above”, “this option”) loses its meaning when lifted out. A passage that names the subject, states the fact and gives the condition can be cited on its own. Use this checklist for every important section:

ElementWeak versionCitable version (illustrative)
HeadingPricingHow much does [product] cost for a team of 20?
First sentenceOur flexible plans suit every business.[Product] costs USD 12 per user a month on the annual plan, so a team of 20 pays USD 240 a month.
ContextSee below for details.Monthly billing costs USD 15 per user; VAT is added for UAE and Saudi customers.
DateNo datePrices checked October 2026.
StructureLong paragraph comparing plansTable with plan, price, users, key limits

Original data helps too. The research paper that introduced GEO found that adding statistics, quotations and cited sources raised a page’s visibility in generative engine answers, with gains of up to 37% when tested on Perplexity (Aggarwal et al., summarised by Everything PR). Use real figures with sources, not invented ones.

How do you get your brand mentioned in sources Perplexity cites?

Find the domains Perplexity cites for your buyers’ questions, then earn genuine mentions on them: helpful answers in relevant Reddit threads, short YouTube videos answering buyer questions, accurate listings on review platforms, and inclusion in independent comparison articles.

  1. Run 20 to 30 buyer questions in Perplexity and log every cited domain.
  2. Group the domains: communities, video, reviews, publishers, competitors, directories.
  3. For Reddit, find the threads already being cited and contribute useful, disclosed answers; our guide to finding high value Reddit threads shows how.
  4. For YouTube, publish short videos answering your top comparison and how to questions, with descriptive titles and transcripts.
  5. For publishers and comparison sites, offer accurate product information, data and expert comment to editors rather than paying for placement.
  6. Repeat the log monthly; our method for citation source mapping turns it into a prioritised outreach list.

Keep your description, pricing model and positioning identical wherever you are mentioned, so Perplexity’s answers describe you consistently; our hub on entity SEO for AI search explains why consistency matters.

How does Perplexity treat freshness and updates?

Perplexity favours current content through its crawling models, which predict how often pages change and when to recrawl them, and through a prefilter that drops stale content before ranking, so outdated pages are less likely to be cited.

  • Show a visible “last updated” date on pages where timing matters, and update it only when the content genuinely changes.
  • Refresh prices, statistics, regulations and product details at least quarterly on commercial pages.
  • Update your XML sitemap’s lastmod values accurately so crawlers know what changed.
  • For fast moving topics, publish dated updates rather than silently editing old posts, so both readers and crawlers see what is new.

How do you check whether Perplexity cites your website?

Check Perplexity citations by running a fixed set of buyer questions several times and logging the sources panel, tracking referral visits from perplexity.ai in analytics, and confirming PerplexityBot visits in your server logs.

MethodWhat it showsHow often
Prompt samplingWhether you are cited or mentioned, and which competitors areMonthly, each question run three or more times
Analytics referralsSessions and conversions from perplexity.aiWeekly
Server logsWhich pages PerplexityBot crawlsMonthly
AI visibility trackerCitation share across many prompts over timeContinuous, if budget allows

Answers vary between runs; in research by SparkToro and Gumshoe, the same brand list repeated for the same prompt less than once in 100 runs (Search Engine Land). Measure share across many runs rather than a single result.

Perplexity citation checklist: ten steps

Work through these ten steps in order; the first four remove blockers, the rest build citations.

  1. Allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt and in CDN or firewall rules.
  2. Confirm PerplexityBot crawls your key pages in server logs.
  3. Put prices, specifications and FAQs in HTML, not images, PDFs or click to load elements.
  4. Keep XML sitemaps current with accurate lastmod dates.
  5. Improve Google rankings for your buyer questions; Perplexity citations overlap strongly with Google’s top 10.
  6. Rewrite key pages into self contained, answer first passages with tables.
  7. Add original data with sources and visible update dates.
  8. Contribute to the Reddit threads Perplexity cites in your category.
  9. Publish short YouTube videos for top comparison and how to questions.
  10. Log citations monthly and track perplexity.ai referrals and conversions.

How Crawl To Click helps brands get cited by Perplexity

Crawl To Click is an SEO and AI visibility consultancy, and we treat Perplexity as the most SEO aligned of the AI assistants, which makes it a useful early win. We check crawler access in robots.txt, CDN and server logs, run a prompt baseline across the buyer questions that matter, and map every domain Perplexity cites in the category. We have applied this to B2B software, fintech, logistics, education, healthcare and ecommerce brands, with the source plan shaped by where each category’s citations actually come from.
