ChatGPT Usage Statistics 2026: Users, Growth, Demographics and Traffic

Last updated: October 2026. Every statistic links to its source, with the date it refers to.

If you are building a business case for AI search, the first question in the room is usually “how many people actually use ChatGPT?” This page answers that with sourced ChatGPT usage statistics: users, growth, who uses it, what they use it for, its market share and the traffic it sends to websites.

The short answer: ChatGPT reached 1 billion weekly active users in August 2026, up from 100 million in November 2023. Users send about 2.5 billion prompts a day (July 2025), 44% of US adults say they have used it, and India is its second largest market with more than 100 million weekly users. Its share of generative AI web visits has fallen to about 53% as Gemini and Claude grow, but it still sends most AI referral traffic to websites.

How many people use ChatGPT? Weekly active user statistics

OpenAI reports ChatGPT usage as weekly active users. The number has grown tenfold in under three years:

Bar chart of ChatGPT weekly active users growing from 100 million in November 2023 to 1 billion in August 2026
  • 100 million weekly users in November 2023, 200 million in August 2024 and 400 million in February 2025, according to the timeline compiled by Search Engine Land.
  • 700 million in August 2025 and 800 million in October 2025 (Search Engine Land).
  • More than 900 million weekly users, alongside more than 50 million consumer subscribers and over 9 million paying business users, announced with OpenAI’s $110 billion funding round in February 2026 (Search Engine Land).
  • 1 billion weekly active users in August 2026, the first time OpenAI confirmed that figure for ChatGPT itself, according to Yahoo Tech.

How to read ChatGPT user numbers

Three different measures get quoted, and mixing them is the most common mistake I see in pitch decks and board slides:

MetricWhat it countsWho reports itUse it for
Weekly active usersPeople who used ChatGPT at least once in a weekOpenAIOverall reach of ChatGPT
Prompts or messages per dayEvery message sent, so heavy users count many timesOpenAI, via pressVolume of questions, comparisons with search
Web visits and traffic shareVisits to chatgpt.com in a browser; app usage is excludedSimilarweb and other panelsComparing ChatGPT with Gemini, Claude and others

A 1 billion weekly user figure and a falling traffic share can both be true at once. The first is OpenAI’s own count of people; the second is a panel estimate of browser visits relative to competitors.

ChatGPT prompts per day and search comparison

  • ChatGPT users send about 2.5 billion prompts a day, about 330 million of them from the US, according to figures OpenAI gave Axios, reported by TechCrunch in July 2025.
  • That was more than double the 1 billion daily queries Sam Altman cited in December 2024 (TechCrunch).
  • For scale, Alphabet has reported around 5 trillion Google searches a year, or just under 14 billion a day (TechCrunch). ChatGPT is large, but Google still handles several times more queries, and not every prompt is a search.

ChatGPT demographics: who uses ChatGPT

Chart of Pew Research data showing the share of US adults who have used ChatGPT rising in every age group between 2023 and 2026
  • 44% of US adults say they have used ChatGPT, up from 18% in 2023, in a survey of 5,119 adults in February 2026 by Pew Research Center. Pew notes the 2026 question also asked about other chatbots, so it is not fully comparable with earlier years.
  • By age: 61% of adults aged 18 to 29, 55% of those aged 30 to 49, 37% aged 50 to 64 and 19% aged 65 and over have used it (Pew Research Center).
  • 49% of US adults have used any AI chatbot, and 24% use one daily (Pew Research Center, February 2026).
  • Education matters: in 2025, 52% of US adults with a postgraduate degree had used ChatGPT, compared with 18% of those with a high school education or less (Pew Research Center).
  • Young users dominate volume: users aged 18 to 25 sent about 46% of messages in OpenAI’s study sample, and the gender gap has closed, with feminine named users reaching parity by mid 2025 (Gizmodo reporting the OpenAI and NBER study).

What people use ChatGPT for: usage by task

The largest public study of ChatGPT usage, by OpenAI’s economic research team and Harvard economist David Deming, classified about 1.5 million conversations using automated tools. The findings were published as an NBER working paper:

  • 73% of messages were not related to work in June 2025, up from 53% in June 2024.
  • Nearly 80% of usage fell into three categories: practical guidance, seeking information and writing.
  • By intent, about 49% of messages were asking (seeking advice or information), 40% doing (drafting, planning, coding) and 11% expressing.
  • Writing made up about 40% of work related messages, while computer programming was about 4.2% of all messages (Gizmodo).

For US adults specifically, Pew Research Center found in 2025 that 28% of employed adults had used ChatGPT for work, 26% to learn something new and 22% for entertainment.

Why the usage split matters for marketers

“Asking” is the behaviour that replaces search. When nearly half of messages are people seeking information or advice, ChatGPT is acting as a research tool, and research is where buyers build their shortlist. The practical question is not whether your buyers use ChatGPT, but whether your brand appears when they ask about your category.

ChatGPT market share statistics

  • ChatGPT’s share of worldwide generative AI web visits fell from about 76% in June 2025 to about 53% in May 2026, while its absolute visits stayed roughly flat, according to Similarweb.
  • Over the same period Gemini rose from under 9% to about 27 to 28%, and Claude from about 2% to close to 9% (Similarweb).
  • Across the whole category, monthly web visits to generative AI platforms rose 70% year over year to 9.5 billion (Similarweb).

In short: ChatGPT is still the largest AI assistant, but the market is growing faster than ChatGPT is. A plan that only tracks ChatGPT will miss a growing share of AI answers. Our roundup of AI search statistics covers Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode in the same format.

ChatGPT referral traffic and conversion statistics

  • Pages cited in US ChatGPT responses rose from about 1.6% of prompts in June 2025 to roughly 6.8% in May 2026, according to Similarweb. More answers now include links.
  • After a May 2026 change, about 62 to 63% of ChatGPT referral visits land on a homepage, up from roughly 26 to 29% (Similarweb). Expect more branded, homepage arrivals and fewer deep page visits.
  • At Ahrefs, AI search sent about 0.5% of visitors but 12.1% of signups over 30 days, converting at roughly 23 times the rate of organic search visitors, with ChatGPT the largest AI source (Ahrefs).

How to measure ChatGPT traffic on your own site

Industry figures set the context; your own analytics decide the budget. In Google Analytics 4:

  1. Go to Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition.
  2. Change the primary dimension to Session source.
  3. Add a filter where session source matches regex chatgpt\.com|chat\.openai\.com.
  4. Add your key events (leads, demo requests, purchases) as a metric and compare the conversion rate with organic search.
  5. To track all assistants together, create a custom channel group with sources matching chatgpt|perplexity|gemini|copilot|claude, placed above the Referral channel.

Remember that referral traffic only shows the clicks. Many people read a ChatGPT answer, note the brand and search for it later, which shows up as direct or branded search. Track AI mentions as well, using a method such as mentions per 100 queries.

ChatGPT usage statistics for India and the UAE

  • India has more than 100 million weekly ChatGPT users and is OpenAI’s second largest market after the US, according to Sam Altman, as reported by India TV News in February 2026. He also said no other country has more students using ChatGPT.
  • In the UAE, 70.1% of the working age population used AI in the first quarter of 2026, the highest rate in the world against a global average of 17.8%, according to the Microsoft AI Diffusion Report reported by Khaleej Times.
  • Takeaway: in both markets AI assistants are mainstream research tools. For UAE buyers, test your category prompts in English and Arabic, as covered in our guide on how to rank on ChatGPT in Dubai.

What ChatGPT statistics mean for your marketing

  1. Treat ChatGPT as a research channel, not a novelty. With 1 billion weekly users and nearly half of messages seeking information, your buyers are asking it about your category.
  2. Check what it says about you. Ask ChatGPT the ten questions your buyers ask before they buy, run each several times, and record whether you are mentioned and how you are described.
  3. Give it accurate facts to repeat. Publish clear, consistent facts about what you do, who you serve and your proof; a brand fact sheet is the fastest start.
  4. Measure AI traffic by conversions, not volume. AI referrals are small in number but often convert far better, so judge them on leads and revenue.
  5. Do not ignore the rest of the market. ChatGPT’s share is falling as Gemini and Claude grow; track every assistant your buyers use.
  6. Use ChatGPT for the work too. Our 100 ChatGPT prompts for SEO cover research, briefs, schema and reporting tasks.

How to cite these ChatGPT statistics

You are welcome to use these figures. Please cite the original source linked next to each statistic, and link to this page as the collection: “ChatGPT Usage Statistics, Crawl To Click”. When you quote user numbers, state the metric (weekly users, prompts or visits) and the date, because they change quickly.

How Crawl To Click uses ChatGPT data in AI visibility work

Crawl To Click is an SEO and AI visibility consultancy. We use market statistics like these to size the opportunity, then work from each client’s own evidence: which buying questions their customers ask ChatGPT and other assistants, how often the brand appears across repeated runs, how it is described, and which sources the answers draw on. From there we fix inaccurate brand facts, strengthen the pages and third party sources those answers rely on, and report AI referrals and conversions next to organic search. The same approach applies whether the business is a software company, a clinic, a property developer or an ecommerce brand. Learn more about our approach.
