The short answer: Shopify SEO for UAE stores comes down to five things: set up Shopify Markets so English and Arabic, and any other Gulf markets, live at their own URLs; write Arabic product and collection content for how Gulf shoppers search rather than translating it; show VAT inclusive prices in AED; fix the duplicate product URLs most themes create; and add product structured data with AED prices, UAE shipping and returns. Shopify handles hreflang, canonicals and sitemaps for each market automatically (Shopify Help Center), so most ranking problems on UAE Shopify stores come from setup choices and content, not the platform.
The opportunity is large. UAE ecommerce was worth about USD 34.6 billion in 2025, according to Research and Markets figures reported by Khaleej Times (Khaleej Times). This guide covers each step with examples from a fictional Dubai perfume store, so you can see exactly what to set and write.
What makes Shopify SEO different for UAE stores?
UAE Shopify stores serve two languages, often several Gulf countries, and shoppers who search with local terms, delivery promises and payment options in mind, so the work is mostly international setup and localised content on top of standard Shopify SEO.
| Area | Typical Shopify store | UAE Shopify store |
|---|---|---|
| Languages | One | English and Arabic, with right to left layout |
| Markets | One country | UAE plus often Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman |
| Currency | One | AED, often SAR and others, with VAT inclusive prices |
| Search terms | Product names | Product names plus Arabic variants, area names, delivery and payment terms |
| Trust signals | Reviews | Reviews, cash on delivery or instalment options, delivery times, returns in the UAE |
| Competition | Other brands | Brands plus marketplaces such as Amazon.ae and Noon in the results |
For the wider strategy beyond Shopify, see our guide to ecommerce SEO in Dubai.
How should you set up Shopify Markets for the UAE?
Use one primary domain with subfolders for each language and market, which Shopify says is the simplest option and recommended for most stores, because subfolders share the authority of your main domain; subdomains and country domains are alternatives with more setup work (Shopify Help Center).
| Option | Example structure | Best for | Trade off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subfolders | Main domain with an Arabic subfolder and a Saudi subfolder | Most UAE stores | Least setup; all markets build one domain’s authority |
| Subdomains | A separate subdomain per language or country | Stores with separate teams or platforms per market | Search engines may treat each as a separate site |
| Country domains | A .ae domain plus a .sa domain | Large brands wanting the strongest country signal | Most setup and link building work for each domain |
Example: a fictional Dubai perfume store, Oud House, sells in the UAE and Saudi Arabia in English and Arabic. A subfolder setup looks like this:
oudhouse.com/ UAE market, English (primary, AED)
oudhouse.com/ar/ UAE market, Arabic (AED)
oudhouse.com/en-sa/ Saudi market, English (SAR)
oudhouse.com/ar-sa/ Saudi market, Arabic (SAR)
Only create a separate Saudi market if you have something different to offer there, such as SAR prices, Saudi delivery times or different products. Two markets with identical content and prices add URLs without adding value.
How does Shopify handle hreflang for English and Arabic?
Shopify adds hreflang tags automatically to every page for each market that has its own domain, subdomain or subfolder, adds an x default tag pointing to your backup market, and updates the tags when you change market or language settings (Shopify Help Center).
For the Oud House setup above, the head of a product page should contain tags like these. Check by viewing the page source on each version:
<link rel="alternate" hreflang="en-AE" href="https://oudhouse.com/products/royal-oud-100ml">
<link rel="alternate" hreflang="ar-AE" href="https://oudhouse.com/ar/products/royal-oud-100ml">
<link rel="alternate" hreflang="en-SA" href="https://oudhouse.com/en-sa/products/royal-oud-100ml">
<link rel="alternate" hreflang="ar-SA" href="https://oudhouse.com/ar-sa/products/royal-oud-100ml">
<link rel="alternate" hreflang="x-default" href="https://oudhouse.com/products/royal-oud-100ml">
Three checks matter. Every version should list all the others and itself, as Google’s guidance requires (Google Search Central); there should be only one set of tags, so remove any added by a translation app or old theme code; and products sold in only one market should only carry tags for that market, which Shopify handles when you add products only to the relevant market catalogues.
Should a UAE Shopify store redirect visitors by location?
Automatic redirection is fine for shoppers as long as search engines can reach every version, and Shopify excludes crawlers from its market redirection so each version gets indexed (Shopify Help Center). Google also recommends letting users switch versions rather than forcing them (Google Search Central).
In practice, add a visible language and country switcher in the header, label it in both languages (English and العربية), and never hide the Arabic version behind a pop up or a cookie that search engines cannot see.
How do you write Arabic product pages that rank on Shopify?
Write Arabic titles, descriptions and meta tags from Arabic search behaviour, not by translating the English page, then add them through Shopify’s Translate & Adapt app, which handles translated content at market specific URLs and lets you adapt content per market (Shopify Help Center).
Example for one Oud House product:
| Field | English (UAE) | Arabic (UAE) |
|---|---|---|
| Product title | Royal Oud Perfume 100ml | عطر عود ملكي 100 مل |
| SEO title | Royal Oud Perfume 100ml | Same Day Delivery Dubai | عطر عود ملكي 100 مل | توصيل في نفس اليوم دبي |
| Meta description | Long lasting Cambodian oud perfume, 100ml. AED 450 inc. VAT. Same day delivery in Dubai, pay in 4 or cash on delivery. | عطر عود كمبودي يدوم طويلاً، 100 مل. 450 درهم شامل الضريبة. توصيل في نفس اليوم في دبي والدفع عند الاستلام. |
| Image alt text | Royal Oud perfume 100ml bottle with gold cap | زجاجة عطر عود ملكي 100 مل بغطاء ذهبي |
Notice what the Arabic version does: it uses درهم for AED and includes delivery and payment terms that UAE shoppers look for. Machine translation tends to produce stiff, formal wording and miss these details. Have a native Arabic editor review at least your top collections and best selling products, and check Arabic keyword variants in Google Keyword Planner before writing.
For choosing between Gulf dialect and Modern Standard Arabic by page type, see our guide on Gulf Arabic vs MSA for SEO content.
Should Arabic URLs use Arabic or English handles?
Keep English handles in Arabic URLs, for example the Arabic product page living under the Arabic subfolder with the same English handle. Arabic characters in URLs are encoded into long strings of percent signs and codes when shared or copied, which looks broken in emails, chats and reports, while the language subfolder and hreflang already tell search engines the page is Arabic.
Recommended: oudhouse.com/ar/products/royal-oud-100ml
Avoid: oudhouse.com/ar/products/%D8%B9%D8%B7%D8%B1-%D8%B9%D9%88%D8%AF
How do you make an Arabic Shopify theme work for SEO?
Use a theme that supports right to left layout natively, then check that the Arabic version renders text, menus, prices and breadcrumbs in the right direction without loading a second set of heavy scripts or fonts that slow the page down.
- Check the html tag: Arabic pages should declare the Arabic language and right to left direction in the page source.
- Check mixed text: prices, sizes and English brand names inside Arabic sentences should not flip or break.
- Check fonts: load one Arabic font family with two weights at most; large Arabic font files are a common cause of slow loading on mobile, which our Core Web Vitals audit guide shows how to diagnose.
- Avoid RTL apps that rewrite pages with JavaScript if your theme supports right to left natively; scripts that rearrange the layout after loading can cause layout shift.
Our guide to RTL website SEO issues covers the right to left checks in detail.

How should UAE Shopify stores show AED prices and VAT?
Show prices in AED including 5% VAT on every product and collection page, because the Federal Tax Authority requires businesses to display tax inclusive prices and has warned of an AED 15,000 fine for not doing so (Gulf News), and because the price in your page, structured data and product feed should match.
For SEO, price consistency matters in three places:
- On the page: the visible AED price, labelled as including VAT.
- In structured data: the same price with AED as the currency.
- In Google Merchant Center: AED is the supported currency for the UAE (Google Merchant Center Help), and mismatched feed and page prices can get products disapproved.
If you run a Saudi market, set SAR prices for it rather than relying on automatic conversion that produces awkward prices such as SAR 459.37. Rounded local prices look trustworthy in results and convert better.
How do you fix duplicate product URLs on Shopify?
Make collection pages link to the main product URL rather than the collection based version; many themes link to a product path nested inside the collection, which Shopify canonicalises to the main product URL, so the canonical page ends up with few or no internal links (Ahrefs Help Center).
Duplicate created by many themes:
oudhouse.com/collections/oud-perfumes/products/royal-oud-100ml
Canonical version Shopify points to:
oudhouse.com/products/royal-oud-100ml
Typical theme fix (in the product card snippet):
Before: {{ product.url | within: collection }}
After: {{ product.url }}
Make the change in a duplicate theme first, preview it, then publish. After the fix, crawl the site again and check that collection pages link to the main product URLs. This matters more on bilingual stores, because every duplicate exists once per language and market.
| Other Shopify duplicate | Example | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Variant parameters | Product URL with a variant number added | Leave as is; Shopify canonicalises to the product |
| Tag filtered collections | Collection URL with a tag added | Keep out of the index unless the tag page has unique demand and content |
| Sort and filter URLs | Collection with sort or filter parameters | Leave blocked or canonicalised; do not link to them in navigation |
| Internal search results | Search page with a query | Keep out of the index; block in robots.txt if crawled heavily |
How do you edit robots.txt on Shopify?
Shopify generates a robots.txt file that works for most stores, and you can customise it by adding a robots.txt.liquid template to your theme; Shopify advises saving a copy of your current output first and using its Liquid objects rather than plain text rules (Shopify developer documentation).
Shopify’s own example adds a rule blocking internal search URLs for all crawlers:
{% for group in robots.default_groups %}
{{- group.user_agent }}
{%- for rule in group.rules -%}
{{ rule }}
{%- endfor -%}
{%- if group.user_agent.value == '*' -%}
{{ 'Disallow: /*?q=*' }}
{%- endif -%}
{%- if group.sitemap != blank -%}
{{ group.sitemap }}
{%- endif -%}
{% endfor %}
Only edit robots.txt for a clear reason, such as heavy crawling of filter or search URLs. Blocking a URL does not remove it from the index if it is already indexed; use noindex for that.
What structured data should a UAE Shopify store use?
Use Product structured data with an Offer in AED, availability, shipping details for the UAE and a return policy, because Google can show price, availability, shipping and returns information in results for merchant listings (Google Search Central). Most current Shopify themes output basic Product markup; check what yours includes with Google’s Rich Results Test.
Example for the Oud House product, with fields many themes leave out:
<script type="application/ld+json">
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "Product",

The price, delivery time and return window must match what the page and your policies say. The Arabic version should carry the same markup with Arabic name and description. For more templates, see our schema markup examples.
How do you optimise Shopify collection pages for UAE searches?
Collection pages usually target the highest value searches, so give each one a unique introduction, a clear H1 that matches the main keyword, filters that do not create indexable duplicates, and a short FAQ answering UAE specific questions on delivery, payment and authenticity.
Example collection intro for “oud perfume Dubai”:
H1: Oud Perfumes
Shop long lasting oud perfumes made with Cambodian, Indian and
Laotian oud oils, from AED 180 including VAT. Order before 2pm for
same day delivery in Dubai and Sharjah, next day across the UAE.
Pay by card, in 4 instalments or cash on delivery.
FAQ
Q: How long does oud perfume last?
Q: Do you deliver to Abu Dhabi on the same day?
Q: Can I return a perfume if the box is opened?
Keep the introduction short above the products and put longer buying guidance below them, so shoppers reach products quickly. Answer the FAQ questions in full on the page; these are the questions AI assistants and Google’s AI features pick up for queries like “best oud perfume Dubai”.
How do UAE Shopify stores compete with Amazon and Noon in search?
Do not compete head on for generic product searches where marketplaces dominate; target brand, category and need based searches where a specialist store is more useful, and build the brand searches that marketplaces cannot win for you.
| Search type | Example | Who usually wins | What a Shopify store can do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Generic product | perfume for men | Marketplaces and big retailers | Compete through Shopping listings rather than organic pages |
| Specialist category | cambodian oud perfume | Specialist stores | Detailed collection page with buying guidance |
| Need or occasion | oud gift set for eid | Stores with relevant guides | Seasonal collections and gift guides |
| Comparison | oud vs musk perfume | Content that explains | Buying guides linked to collections |
| Brand | oud house royal oud | The brand’s own site | Consistent naming on site, marketplaces and social |
What does a sample Shopify SEO review for a UAE store look like?
A Shopify SEO review lists each issue, where it was found, its impact and the fix. The example below is illustrative, for the fictional Oud House store, not a real client.
| # | Issue | Evidence | Impact | Fix | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arabic pages machine translated | Arabic meta titles copy English word order; no Arabic keyword research | Arabic pages get few impressions | Native rewrite of top 10 collections and 30 products | High |
| 2 | Collection links point to duplicate product URLs | Crawl shows main product URLs with no internal links | Weaker signals to canonical pages | Remove the within collection filter in the product card | High |
| 3 | Duplicate hreflang tags | Theme and translation app both add tags | Conflicting language signals | Remove app tags; keep Shopify’s | High |
| 4 | Saudi market identical to UAE | Same prices converted from AED, same content | Extra URLs with no added value | Set SAR prices and Saudi delivery details, or merge the market | Medium |
| 5 | Product markup missing shipping and returns | Rich Results Test shows only price and availability | Fewer details in results | Add shipping and return policy fields | Medium |
| 6 | Six Arabic font weights loaded | Over 800 KB of fonts on Arabic pages | Slow loading on mobile | Two weights; preload the main one | Medium |
The store and findings above are illustrative, not a real client. For a full process, see our ecommerce SEO audit guide, and for bilingual checks across any platform, our bilingual SEO audit.

How Crawl To Click approaches Shopify SEO for UAE stores
Crawl To Click is an SEO and AI visibility consultancy, and our Shopify work starts with the setup decisions that are hardest to change later: market structure, languages and URLs. We then research English and Arabic keywords separately, map them to collections and products, fix theme level issues such as duplicate product links, hreflang conflicts and slow Arabic fonts, and add product markup that matches prices, delivery and returns. Content and collection priorities are set by what can convert, not by search volume alone.
We apply the same process to ecommerce stores across fashion, beauty and fragrance, electronics, home and furniture, health products and food, as well as to clinics, software companies and property businesses that sell online, in the UAE and India.
FAQs on Shopify SEO for UAE stores
Is Shopify good for SEO in the UAE?
Yes. Shopify handles hreflang, canonical tags and sitemaps for each market automatically and supports Arabic through Shopify Markets and the Translate & Adapt app. Most SEO problems on UAE Shopify stores come from setup and content choices, such as machine translated Arabic or duplicate product links in the theme.
Should my UAE Shopify store use subfolders or a .ae domain?
Shopify recommends subfolders for most stores because they share the authority of the main domain and need the least setup. A .ae domain gives a stronger UAE signal but means building authority separately if you also run other country domains.
Does Shopify add hreflang tags automatically for Arabic?
Yes. Shopify adds hreflang tags for every market and language that has its own domain, subdomain or subfolder, including an x default tag, and updates them when you change market settings. Remove any duplicate tags added by apps or old theme code.
Should I translate my Shopify store into Arabic for SEO?
Yes, if you sell to Arabic speaking customers, but write the Arabic content from Arabic keyword research and have a native editor review it. Machine translated Arabic often misses the terms Gulf shoppers search for and reads poorly.
Do UAE Shopify stores have to show prices including VAT?
Yes. The UAE Federal Tax Authority requires businesses to display VAT inclusive prices and has warned of an AED 15,000 fine for not doing so. Keep the same VAT inclusive AED price on the page, in structured data and in your product feed.
How do I fix duplicate product URLs on Shopify?
Change your theme’s product card so collection pages link to the main product URL instead of the collection based version, usually by removing the within collection filter. Shopify already canonicalises the duplicates, but internal links should point to the canonical page.
Can a Shopify store rank against Amazon.ae and Noon?
Yes, for specialist, need based, comparison and brand searches. For generic product searches, marketplaces usually dominate organic results, so use Google Shopping listings there and focus organic content on categories where expertise helps.
